OUR MISSION
To Promote Knowledge & Practical Skills of Massage Therapy leading towards the Professional certification of Highly Skilled Practitioners.
Dr. Michael Kaplan, M.D., Ph.D. founded The Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. in 1999.
As both a Board Certified Physician specializing in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services and as an established Medical Researcher, Dr. Kaplan provides leadership and direction to the staff of Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. The idea of developing an Institute in Massage Therapy emerged as Dr. Kaplan observed how many of his patients were helped by therapeutic massage. Convinced of the benefits of massage therapy as a beneficial adjunct to traditional medicine, Dr. Kaplan envisioned the formation of an institute where individuals could:
- Learn about Massage Therapy and Bodywork
- Obtain certification as Professional Massage Therapists
- Conduct research on the benefits of massage therapy for health, wellness and improvement of the lives of patients with illnesses
- Understand how massage is a beneficial tool through the various stages of the health-illness continuum
- And where Certified Massage Therapists could maintain their certification and be updated on the latest information about massage therapy
As Medical Director, Dr. Michael Kaplan provides leadership and direction to the faculty and staff of The Massage Institute of Maryland, Inc. Dr. Kaplan and his staff are committed to providing an excellent learning environment in which students can gain the skills and confidence needed to become Professional Massage Therapists.
The Medical Director provides leadership and direction to the staff and administrators. The School has a close relationship with The Rehabilitation Team, which benefits students by allowing them to practice Massage Therapy Techniques with a variety of patient populations; chronic pain, neuromuscular disorders, and many other debilitating illnesses. The Student Clinic receives patient referrals from The Rehabilitation Team as well from self referrals by word of mouth or marketing. Students learn theoretical basis of Massage Therapy, and first practice their newly learned skills on their peers, then later go on to observe massage therapy act as complementary adjunct to health care, benefiting a broad array of patient conditions at the student clinic.
